Former lead animator Tim Borrelli tweeted about the layoffs and retweeted upcoming job opportunities before announcing that the development studio behind the many Scribblenauts adventures had been shut down. The news was apparently broken to him as he was clearing his office after being let go by the studio.
The damage done by the cancellation of upcoming Scribblenauts: Fighting Words by Warner Bros is still unclear however, with CEO Jeremiah Slaczka commenting to Polygon that:
“It happened so quick we’re not sure what the plans are going forward yet.”
It’s likely the studio will be shut down, and that’s the way the majority of the media seem to be handling the news. Though it’s not confirmed yet, between Borrelli’s “RIP 5th Cell” tweets, and the sheer number of staff being layed off, there’s little wriggle room for the devs to come out the other side.
5th Cell was started in 2003 and found its biggest hit in 2009’s Scribblenauts on Nintendo DS.
