The new year brings a new month of free games for PS Plus users. As always, you have until the first Wednesday of the month to download last month’s titles (hint: you’ll want to snag a copy of Stories: The Path of Destinies while you can), and your new batch will be ready and waiting on the same day.
PS4 will see a free copy of Day of the Tentacle Remastered to get the ball rolling.
This 1993 classic originally hailed from the folks over at LucasArts as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s Maniac Mansion. Through three unlikely heroes, you are tasked with stopping Dr. Fred from taking over the world with his mutated purple tentacle in this puzzle adventure title. LucasArts are back for the remaster alongside Double Fine Productions, and fans have the chance to switch between the original classic and the remaster. Day of the Tentacle Remastered is also up for cross-play with PS Vita.
Things get more serious with This War of Mine: The Little Ones which brings daunting sobriety to our month.
The original PC title provided an experience like no other, the enlightening plight of existing as a civilian trapped in a war torn shell. Bringing children into the mix adds a whole new level of soul squeezing. During the day you aim to keep everyone satiated and content – crafting, maintaining moral, helping the children through, and sorting through your inventory. When night falls you have options to sleep through, guard your territory, or scavenge the world around you for much needed resources. Each option comes with its own risks and its own requirements, and with such a personal story as this it’s unlikely you’ll jump straight out of it without a moment’s extra thought.
Azkend 2 is a causal match-three puzzle adventure that sees you escaping from the centre of the Earth after your ship has been caught off guard on PS Vita.
Don’t let the match-three trope turn you off, there’s actually a nicely polished narrative behind these 60 levels and mini-games.
Also up for PS Vita is Titan Souls (also available on cross-play with PS4) which sees players take on the role of a single hero attempting to reassemble shards of Titan souls in a quest for truth and power.
This gorgeous retro looking top-down adventure was developed by Acid Nerve in 2015.
Players can also don their racing helmets for Blazerush on PS3 as well as jump into the steampunk world of The Swindle in which you take down a massive surveillance technology revolution that threatens your livelihood as a master thief.
It’s not a great haul, but This War of Mine is a title i’ve been raring to get my hands on plus Azkend 2 might just be more than it seems on the tin.
